Oh how I enjoyed this film. After the first 10-15 minutes, that is. The start scene is not that representative for the flow of the total film.
Johnny Depp in a good old Willy Wonka/Mad Hatter-type of character named Charlie Mortdecai. Who is married to a lovely lady (played so nicely by Gwyneth Palthrow) and they’re about to become bankrupt, unless they sell a thing or two.

Given that the last film with Johnny Depp I saw was not a typical ‘Johnny’ film. This one so much made up for that! I truly enjoyed the idiotic performances, ridiculous storyline and British polite accents. Mortdecai’s help Jock, (Paul Bettany) is a lovely sidekick aswell, just like Alastar (Ewan McGregor) who is secretly in love with Mortdecai’s wife Johanna. The funniest (to me) are the romantic scenes. I don’t usually like those much. These kept me going, I laughed so much. Also the inclusion of some unexpected stars, like Jeff Goldblum, did the trick.

I know Johnny Depp gives mixed feelings to people these days. I have a different opinion on that altogether and this film is just lovely and a Must See!

OK I should start this blog by saying I was wrong about Trump. I truly was. I mean I already knew he was one of the most stupid men on this entire planet by the way he proceeded his campaign. Being a strong leader takes more than simply smearing someone else by repeating the only thing you have against them: some stupid emails, while he never ever took any responsibility for any of the wrong that he did himself, nor was he ever willing to speak about false claims he made.
The emails kept coming up, and the fact that Hillary was, apparently, not able to rapidly answer in a way that it could be set aside, made it worse. It kept following her. Like a fart that’s slightly more toxic than you expected it to be.
Meanwhile; Trump did not so much as giving an example of what he was gonna do, except for that Mexican wall. It was one of the few moments he actually mentioned WHAT he was gonna do.

He truly was and still is, the most stupid and most sexist option that was ever available. Despite the fact his daughter Ivanka Trump runs a successful business. He puts her in a chair he is supposed to sit in himself, but I have never gotten the impression he has taken any of his children seriously. Just that he puts them into important positions, so he’s sure no-one will overcross him any way. Daddy is running the business sweeties, you’re only nice decoration.

Back to why I was wrong. I’ve read the different opinions about his possible presidency. People accused him, or rather warned his voters, for the possible outcome. That’s where I went wrong. I truly thought that a) it wouldn’t happen and b) that he was intrinsicly stupid, but there weren’t that many stupid people in the USA to reflect his way of handling tricky situations.
I also forgot that America has one of the most difficult voting systems. People’s votes only count for a certain degree. It’s not actually fully a democracy. Not in my opinion, that is. In an actual full democracy, Hillary WOULD have won.

I had no idea his way of responding to a situation (Charlottesville)  would wake up an apparently existing range of idiots who now feel heard, dare to come out of their shadows and dare to think they are expressing an appropriate opinion themselves.
Even when Kirk Douglas warned his fellow Americans that he had heard the same speech coming out of Trumps’ mouth, before entering the WWII, I thought: no, Trump hasn’t been THAT bad. He is amazingly stupid, yes, but not that bad.
Because at the time, Erdogan was also at it. Wanting more power. To gain some, Erdogan was telling all Turkish people around the world that they should tell on their fellow Turkish civilians who spoke bad about him.
I did know Hitler did that. It’s how Anne Frank got busted, amongst so many others.
I thought to myself: Trump is stupid, but he is not ‘pulling a Hitler’, as I’d like to express it. Erdogan was telling other countries they acted like Hitler, while being the biggest guilty one on that account himself. He still is, by the way. As long as Erdogan has anything to say in that country, I will never ever visit it voluntarily. I am truly sorry for any woman or anyone with an opinion of their own who has to live there. Erdogan doesn’t allow a different opinion than his own, keeps firing any personal on an official position, until he has all the power in the world, it seems. I did think that was ‘pulling a Hitler’. I didn’t see Trump do that, and therefor I misassumed that he was, despite being so stupid, a safer option. Safer, but still the most stupid the USA could do with. I did think they deserved better.

Then Charlottesville happened. The response of Donald Trump came. The public was waiting for a response. One that could help lift their spirits. One that would show the world, suddenly, what an incredible man there was, steering the wheel of the round big thing we call earth. I did know we didn’t have to expect much, it being Trump, but still. His response and the response to that woke me up forgood.
Donald Trump really is vile. I don’t know what can be expected from him, but I do know it can never be good.

During the years of Obama, we saw a loving power couple. They were warm, charming, loving, tender, caring, they showed a love for one another that made you feel like they were the head of a cosy family you were part of. They were involved in important matters, Barack would give a speech that gave you back a feeling of strength and believe that there’s still good in the world. His wife was involved in multiple good causes, their children were visibly an important part of their lives and in short: it was a pretty picture.
We appear to have ended up in the freezer with the Trump’s. I’m pretty sure we will be the main course soon.

The bad thing is: youngsters take his example of not accepting people who look a bit different, who think different, and now feel free to harass these people. Because Donald Trump doesn’t tell them violence is never the answer. He actually doesn’t say anything. He just shows he doesn’t care. At all.

I did always think Trump was stupid. I have never changed my mind about that. Given that on tv is shown how easy it is to earn a lot of money by simply appearing on there and doing nothing, I have no admiration whatsoever for Trump.
Any of his family members are truly despicable, the women included. Fighting to empower women, while the patriarch of the family brags about how he sexually abuses and intimidates women, even bragging that he thinks his daughter is shaggable or whatever. Their father and her husband pardoned a man who was happy to let a woman give birth in chains (because his own wife preferred to keep bondage out of the bedroom, I guess?)!
How is that empowering women, Ivanka?
How is that fighting against bullying, Melania?
How do you keep your daughters clean from any abuse if you don’t even tell your dad to pipe down towards vulnerable young girls and women, Ivanka?
How is that helping in that department? I hope you DO realise that it takes more than just the people within your own circles to actually BE a good person?
Soldiers are fighting for your life, Donald Trump. They are fighting for the people and their country, and you’re simply telling them they’re not good enough, because they had the misfortune to end up in the wrong body and still feel the need to fight. You told them to basically just stay at home, Donald. What for? Are you gonna fight yourself? You’re hair might get tangled, you know? Your sons won’t help. They’re too busy trophy hunting.

I Know Who Killed Me

Don’t be fooled by the description of the film that this is in fact a sort of murder mystery. It’s actually anything but. It’s a ‘look at me, I’m Lindsay Lohan’ catwalk and nothing else. I have no idea why Julia Ormond and Neal McDonough even bothered to show up. The acting is appalling, not even the slightest bit convincing and they know it. They don’t really care. And you wouldn’t either.
Supposedly there’s a storyline. If it even exists, it’s that youngster Aubrey Fleming goes missing after she doesn’t take the missing and killing of several other girls seriously. When she is found, she’s not in one piece. A few bodyparts have been taken. But also: she is convinced she’s someone else.

The fact that she believes she’s actually a stripper and this so-called fact is put into the film so extensively without any proper reason, nor the ‘love making’ scene she has with her boyfriend, really only made me realise even more: ah, so it’s not actually meant to be about anything else.
Sure, the disgusting scenes are truly disgusting, but other than that, this film has pretty much nothing to offer. A complete waste of time.

Unless you’re in love with Lindsay Lohan, in which case your life will be empty without having seen this one.

Meet The Robinsons

This is a wonderful film about a boy, Lewus, who was dropped off at an orphanage as a baby, and is trying so hard to get adopted. And fails at every attempt.
You see, Lewis is a little inventor, but unfortunately, all of his inventions fail. Every time he tries to impress people who come to have an interview, something goes wrong with the machine he built.
Lewis has a hard time dealing with not getting adopted, of course, as is his roommate, Goob, who barely gets any sleep thanks to Lewis. You see, if Lewis is inventing stuff, he can’t bare to go to bed. He needs to finish it. So Goob doesn’t get any sleep either.
One day, there’s a science market where Lewis finally wants to show his latest invention. He manages to make it, but gets distracted by a weird boy, who asks him if Lewis has seen a guy with a certain hat. But no, Lewis hasn’t.
When the science fair goes wrong, the boy successfully tries to safe Lewis and this is where a weird but happy adventure starts.

This film strongly reminds of Back to the Future II, with elements of Despicable Me (I KNOW the studios have copied the place where Agnes, Margo and Edith were coming from, it’s the exact same!), Jurassic Park, Up and Alice in Wonderland. At times it seems like a little much craziness. If it were told by a small child, it would dazzle you. Like ‘what is s/he on about?! A dinosaur being chased by a purple squid??’ and so on.
But when you see the ending, there’s just so much that falls into place that it does add up.
And might leave you welling up. It did to me. Far more so than ‘Up’ ever did. Then again, I didn’t like Up too much.

There is one part of the storyline that was cut short and didn’t do justice because of it. When you see it, you’ll notice that someone who has been holding grudges, would never be convinced that easily that they went too far. I feel this is done because the film would have been too long if they’d extended it. That is a bit of a fail, but otherwise: this film is just lovely for youngsters who cannot handle the agression in films as I mentioned before -expect Despicable Me-.

Muriel’s Wedding

This lovely and funny film is about Muriel (amusingly played by Toni Colette), a girl from Porpoise Spit, Australia, who really only has one dream: to get married. Hence the title of the film.

There’s a few problems though, the most important one being Muriel doesn’t actually have a boyfriend. It’s not like she doesn’t try, she’s just…not getting there.
Her circle of friends (read: cheerleaders who have always thought of Muriel more like a funny lapdog than an actual person) is no help there: they are more likely to tell her exactly what to wear, what to say and what to do, then to just enjoy the girl she is. Her family is of no help at all either. Consisting of two brothers and two sisters without any other dreams than sitting in front of the telly and watch sports, plus two parents who have no idea about the needs of their children. Their father doesn’t because he’s too absorbed in his dream; to become a politician and run away with the woman he’s having an affair with. His wife, the mother of his children, has a busy life being elsewhere with her thoughts at all times. She does try. She just isn’t all there.
When her father’s business associate offers Muriel a job, something happens that changes Muriel’s life. She meets Rhonda, a former classmate, played by Rachel Griffiths. The both of them meet again, and it turns out they both have been bullied throughout their schoolperiod by the same group of bloody cheerleaders. Who ‘happen’ to be on that very same location. The mad ride goes on from there.

This film is a must see for any ABBA fan because of the soundtrack, but it’s a hilarious piece of work too. Toni Colette is fantastic playing the slightly overweight Muriel (not really though, just that ABBA suit fits her less well) who struggles to say anything interesting to anyone, which isn’t that easy when your only two interests consists of wedding dresses and playing ABBA songs.

3096 Days

This film, that shows the kidnapping, captivity and escaping of Natascha Kampusch from Wolfgang Prikopil, is a bit of a weird one.

Based on Natascha’s autobiography, it has very moving moments, especially of the young Natascha (beautifully and intensely play by Amelia Pidgeon) who begs her kidnapper for food, stating that she hasn’t eaten in three days (?!) or him stating repeatedly that she needs to obey him, that her parents don’t love her, that they haven’t paid ransom, when he is just terrible to her: those moments you just want to strangle Prikopil. At the same time, you’re sort of in search for his inner motivation. Why does he do this to her? What does he want from her? Why did he pick her? What does he want with her?
Natascha Kampusch has always stated there was no sex nor rape, but given that she was the victim, I am not entirely sure how to explain that. Has he told her that wasn’t it? She was intelligent to know it was, at the time, I suppose, but why do you keep an innocent child with you for so many years then? Was she just some sort of hamster to him? A pet he could keep in his cellar?

Then again: even though she spent so many years with him, you realise his character is a bit empty because Natascha never really got to know this aspect of him either. After she escaped, he killed himself. He chose the easy way out. The bastard.

Despite the obvious ‘pity’ factor -you DO feel very sorry for the poor girl, being captivated- there’s a lot missing in this film. Such as a narrator, to at least interpret Natascha’s feelings, as she looks at him desperately, or when there’s another timehop, stuff like that. Because there’s one voice that will never be explained, but I can’t for the life of me imagine that Natascha never questioned his motives, never had any inner dialogue? Or at least why it’s not in this film. It would have made the film a bit more interesting, to be fair. There’s no real inner struggle to see.
There’s moments {possible spoiler ALERT} where he beats the crap out of her, and it turns out later, she wrote those down, kept them. But no voice, nor any other explanation to what she did with those notes. Or if they were kept, somehow, in any way? {/possible spoiler ALERT}
She just wants to please her captivator. Obviously. You want to do whatever is necessary from the one who holds the key to every part of your life.

I know that people have been curious about why she was so sorry that Prikopil died, or why on earth she would want to keep the house that she was held hostage in for so long. But if it helds the most important memories of where you once stayed for your formative years, you do understand. It’s just all you have of that time, even if it was mostly shitty. She made it liveable by a survivemode.

Another big failure about this film: it’s in English. That just doesn’t make any sense.

The Danish Girl

This film, based on a story that was modified so many times that the endresult no longer matches any previous happenings with reality, is therefor an interesting bio that never seems to have happened.

Simple storyline: married couple (Gerda and Einar Wegener) are both painters. They have been trying to conceive a child for a while, but to no success. Einar has been somewhat more successful in being a painter than Gerda has, but both are regarded as good painters nontheless.
One afternoon, a client is running late for a portrait to be made, so Gerda asks Einar if he can please help her, by putting on some stockings and slippers, the one the ballet dancer who is the client, is wearing on the portrait. The sensation of putting on the stockings seems to unveal an old sensation in Einar that he had forgotten.

Gerda is very supportive about Einars’ curiosity towards fabrics she’s wearing. She doesn’t blink an eye when she finds out, while undressing him, Einar has found a way to one of her silken negligé’s for instance. The sex doesn’t change, nor does the love between them.

The first party they attend as two women is a different story. What starts as a joke, develops as an illfelt experience. The way Eddie Redmayne gives a voice, nervous gestures and shy smiles to his character, is exactly how it must have felt, and how you live through that moment. It’s quite remarkable.
After that, Gerda’s feelings towards Einars’ alternative personality Lili, change. She no longer wants Lili around. Though Einar wants to please his wife and meet her needs, he discovers he is no longer able to. The beast has unleashed, so to say.

What follows is still depicted as the story between Gerda and Einar only. Ok, and Ulla, the dancer friend, and the painting and art exhibition societies. But never do you see them around their own family, their judgement or their knowledge of the situation, or even around siblings.
You do see Einar being misunderstood, but not as severely as one might expect for someone who was amongst the pioneers of transgenders.
The portrayal of a man, admiring his own body, searching for what he feels is most comfortable for his spirit and soul, is depicted quite intimate.

Gerda is an incredibly strong woman, it seems, nearly too strong, but shows so well how marriages worked back then: the vows do say ‘in sickness and in health’.

Einar visits several doctors, and the one who helps him in the end, is Sebastian Koch. The procedure is not an easy one, especially at the time.

For who is interested in transgenders, it is certainly an interesting film, given the uneasy feeling it gives you at times, I’m not I’d recommend it to anyone. Then again, it’s the acting that is so very strong here.
